The weekend before last I did some more exploring of the local SW area with a particular aim – to find a good coffee. Thanks to Giulia from Mondomulia I was off to a winning start as she pointed me in the direction of Birdhouse in Clapham. It was love at first sight. Now I know good coffee and tasty food lies at the heart of a great cafe, but in my opinion if you’ve got the decor right too you’re on to a winner.
I love bright colours and I’m a big fan of great colour combinations and Birdhouse have got it spot on. Heck they even match the pedestrian crossing outside! That chirpy canary yellow greets you from the door to your table and coffee cup.
But you probably want to know more about the coffee right? I ordered my usual cappuccino and a sunny cup of caffeine fuel landed on my table a few minutes later. They serve Climpson and Sons here which is a London Roaster I’ve not consciously come across before, after this coffee I’ll be looking out for it in the future though. In my opinion it had a nice balanced taste, not too bitter which is how I like it. (I do still need to work on understanding coffee notes but you can find more info here)
I was hungry so I ordered some banana bread too.
Just looking at this makes my stomach rumble! It was SO good. Smothered in butter, it was moist and just delicious.
I could have eaten plenty of other things on the menu – French toast and strawberries, Granola and yoghurt. For my savoury appetite, there were a lot of people with small sauce pans of hot food on their table. I failed to suss out what it was but given the satisfied faces on the people who had ordered them I need to go back and find out more!
I sat, enjoyed my order, and took in my surroundings for a short while as the locals came and went.
It’s a great option if you’re in the area (it’s not too far from Clapham Junction rail station). Grab a great coffee, pick up a treat and enjoy the sunny decor.
Do you have a cafe you love in your local area?
