Birthdays in the City

I love my birthday.  It’s a great excuse to get my favourite people together, buy myself some treats I can’t quite justify the rest of the year, eat cake and drink some bubbles.  It’s also the only time of year I receive pretty post which doesn’t ask for money from my bank account.  I’m lucky to have a summer birthday which meant last year I was sunning myself and drinking cocktails in Marbella last year.  This year there was no chance I was going to be in work so I took the day off last week to have a girly wander and enjoy what the City had to offer.

I tested out some new places and old favourites on the day and during the week so I thought I’d share where I went and what I got up to in case it adds some new places to your London list!

Breakfast at The Riding House Cafe

The Riding House Cafe has been on my to go to list for a while, I can’t tell you where I stumbled upon it but I have a feeling it’s probably somewhere which has been mentioned in some of my favourite magazines or by journalist tweeters.  The riding house theme made it warm and welcoming and the staff were friendly and chatty.  I ordered the indulgent buttermilk pancakes (huge!) and a cappuccino, my birthday company Lucinda ordered poached egg on toast with tea.  As we both had eyes bigger than our belly we couldn’t resist sharing the strawberries and poached pear, a sort of breakfast dessert really! All delicious and just £13 each which was pretty good for the amount of food we ate!

Shopping in Topshop and nails at OPI Selfridges

It’s pretty hard to walk past Oxford Street’s giant Topshop and not pop in to see what new treasures they have in store.  I honestly hadn’t intended to buy anything but couldn’t resist these new shoes and polka dot trousers which of course I wore the next day.

After a few treats and a stop by Bobbi Brown we headed to OPI in Selfridges for some new nails.  I thought £18 was a pretty decent price for a nice tidy up.

Longing for Mulberry

No birthday or trip to Selfridges would be complete without a bit of Mulberry longing.  I haven’t quite reached the next special birthday yet so I couldn’t quite justify a purchase but no harm in having a look, just in case my lottery numbers come up soon of course…

Prosecco at The Living Room, Heddon Street

A reliable chain of bars which provides enjoyable drinks (and pretty good meals) without making a huge dent in your purse.

Dinner at Piccolino, Heddon Street

I’ve been to Piccolino a few times, it offers some pretty nice italian food at a good price and I love the buzz of Heddon Street.  Just off Regent Street, it comes alive on a warm summers evening with al fresco dinners and you might be lucky enough to get a live string quartet to enjoy too.

Dinner at Loco Mexicano, Westbourne Grove

I do like to enjoy a few celebrations and Wednesday night headed off to Loco Mexicano on Westbourne Grove.  You’ll be able to get your mouth around some pretty good Mexican and margaritas, plus there are so many sombreros around no one can escape getting into the Mexican spirit!

I rounded off the birthday week with some Friday drinks with my friends. I got so wrapped up catching up with everyone I don’t have any photographic evidence but I can tell you that Wenlock and Essex in Islington is a great place to enjoy drinks with a group of friends.  It’s laid back, the music’s varied and if you have enough to drink you can head out back to their small dance floor.

All in all it was a great birthday in the City!!

Do you like celebrating your birthday? What treats do you love to enjoy most?
