Portraits are not something I’m quick to book in, just the word conjures up uncomfortable family pictures, forced work passes and those caricatures you always see tourists being sucked in by around the city. But when Lyndsay asked if I fancied popping along to YCN in Shoreditch to get a free portrait by Damien Florébert Cuypers I thought with a creative East London location it had to be something different and worth popping along to.
Not content with just showing up I had a rummage around Google to find out what the artists talents were and I wasn’t disappointed. Damien is a French illustrator who has an impressive creative CV, with illustrations for the New York Magazine, this year’s London Fashion week (check a few out here) and the Frieze Art Fair in New York. It’s an art form which is definitely growing on me at the moment and what I liked about Damien’s portraits was the similarity to fashion sketches with an element that is much more relatable and fun.

The YCN are hosting portraits by Damien until 24 June, you can find more about the event on their website where you’ll find details about making a booking (I think you can just turn up though, they’re very friendly at the YCN).
Whilst you wait you can watch the man in action…
Or have a good look around the YCN shop and browse through the illustrations and art works on display.
I did feel a bit strange when in the hot seat and wasn’t quite sure where to look but there was a friendly atmosphere about and Damien was quick with his creations.
I think he managed to knock a few years off me don’t you think?
If you’re in London this weekend I definitely recommend popping in. You could always tie it in with a trip to the Columbia Road Flower Market on Sunday!
How do you feel about portraits? Something you’d like to have or would avoid at all costs?
